Trajectories of childhood antisocial behaviour: A new model and prevention program for the early onset life course persistent offender
This project will examine the trajectories of childhood antisocial behavior and develop a prevention program for children suspended from primary schools.
The research is well underway with more than 30 Western Australian schools involved. The first phase of the research involves the development of an instrument to identify different personal characteristics of children suspended from school and the subsequent mapping of their antisocial behaviour trajectories.
The second phase of the research will involve the development and evaluation of an intervention program (called Mindfields). We are particularly interested in identifying the personal characteristics of children who respond well to the self-regulatory program and those who do not.
The third phase of the research will involve the development and testing of a re-entry program for primary school-aged children who have been suspended from school for antisocial behaviour.
The re-entry intervention program will be based on an innovative approach that has been successful in increasing self-regulation among adolescent students with severe antisocial behaviours.
The program will incorporate interactive video segments that allow children to reflect, discuss and evaluate decisions made given different scenarios.
