History of the
Faculty

 

The Faculty was established in 1916 and has grown to be one of the leading providers of teaching preparation courses in the world. Find out more about the Faculty's history below.

1902 Cyril Jackson

1902

Director General of Education Sir Cyril Jackson persuades the government to establish a training college for teachers in Claremont.

Cecil Andrews, who was educated at Merchant Taylors’ School and St John’s College, Oxford, prior to training as a teacher at Battersea, became principal of the College.

1916 Claremont Teachers College

1916

The University of Western Australia Faculty of Arts offers a unit in ‘Education’ which is also available to students at Claremont Teachers College.

1927 Robert George Cameron

1927

The University of Western Australia establishes a Chair in Education and a department in its own right. Robert George Cameron is appointed as first Chair in Education. (Robert George Cameron is pictured at the far left with his students in 1931.)

The Master of Education degree is introduced.

1954 Colsell Sanders

1954

Colsell Sanders succeeds Professor Robert George Cameron as Professor and Dean of Education. From the mid-1950s to the end of the 1960s, the Faculty of Education expands in size under the leadership of Professor Colsell Sanders.

First thesis, ‘The Role of the Educator in the Emergence of Civilisation’ is completed by Arthur Hartley.

Michael White becomes the first successful doctoral graduate of the Faculty.

Dr Peter G. Cole is appointed Dean of Education.

A Doctorate in Education (EdD) is established. Professor Simon Clarke is the first graduate.

1997

The Master of Teaching course is introduced into the regions.

The first female Head of the Education Department at The University of Western Australia, Dr Felicity Haynes, is appointed.
