If you are not a UWA graduate, you must submit an original or certified copy of your:

  • Academic transcripts for all tertiary qualifications
  • Birth certificate or passport as evidence of being a permanent resident or citizen or Australia.

Key Information

  • Part time study only.
  • Classes will be scheduled from 4.00pm.
  • Two units will be offered each semester.
  • Each unit consists of 25 hours per semester.
  • Participants may take up to two years to complete the course.

Responding to national and international trends in quality teaching, the Graduate School of Education has introduced the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching to assist tertiary educators working in higher education.

The course will assist lecturers and tutors in higher education to develop expertise and skill in teaching their discipline.

Course outline

The course will enable lecturers and tutors to:

  • develop expertise and skill in teaching their discipline,
  • increase their understanding of contemporary teaching approaches including:
    • the way students learn,
    • the principles which underpin curriculum design,
    • evaluation and assessment,
    • the use of digital technologies in education,
  • provide practising higher education teachers with a formal qualification that testifies to their professionalism as teaching academics.

Structure

The course will be offered in a variety of modes depending on the content and learning requirements of the units and may include a semester seminar series, online interaction and intensive workshop modes.

Participants will engage in critical and peer review of their teaching practices, and are expected to achieve the following outcomes:

  • an understanding of contemporary pedagogical approaches;
  • an understanding of good practice in teaching and critical reflection on the implications of this practice in higher education;
  • an understanding of the principles which underpin curriculum design;
  • an ability to apply a wide repertoire of approaches to curriculum design;
  • an understanding of the principles which underpin evaluation and assessment;
  • an ability to apply a wide repertoire of approaches to evaluation and assessment;
  • an understanding of the principles which underpin the use of digital technologies in education;
  • an ability to employ a wide range of digital technologies in teaching;
  • increased skill in researching and communicating professional practice and integrating scholarship, research and teaching.

The course comprises four units of six points to a total value of 24 points:

Participants will be granted advanced standing if they have successfully completed the professional development program Foundations of University Teaching and Learning provided by the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL).

Admission requirements

Applicants for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching must have a bachelor’s degree and be employed on the teaching staff of a tertiary institution.

Assessment requirements

Assessment will be designed to specifically target the intended student learning outcomes as appropriate for each unit of study.
