The Faculty of Education is offering a two-year Master of Teaching course that enables students to qualify as early childhood teachers of Kindergarten through to Year 3.

Early childhood teachers play a critical and foundational role in preparing young people for life-long learning and participation in society.

As a graduate of this course you will  have an in-depth knowledge of the theory and the practical skills required for early childhood teaching and be able to work in state and independent schools and other early childhood settings both nationally and internationally.

Course outline

The course has a strong emphasis on the interface of play, directed learning and teaching across all developmental domains and learning areas and is informed by comprehensive and contemporary understandings of early child development. Students will be introduced to teaching and assessment techniques in a range of important curriculum areas including the music, art, science, health and physical education. The integration of theory and practice is an important aspect of this program and students will have the opportunity to practise their teaching skills in school placements each semester.

Final year students are offered the opportunity to enter an 'interventions' stream, with an action research component that focuses on helping children who have learning difficulties or who need extension, or a research stream that can lead to entry into doctoral programs. For more information about this, please see entry requirements for relevant doctoral programs.

At the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate:

  • a thorough understanding of child development from 3 – 8 years within the wider context of life-long learning;
  • planning, implementing  and assessing a wide range of learning experiences, lessons and programmes across learning areas in Early Childhood Education;
  • detailed knowledge about how to teach literacy and numeracy;
  • knowledge of contemporary curriculum structures and their relationship to current practices, policies and theories in education;
  • awareness of the relationship between theories, policies and practice through a process of critical reflection;
  • developing skills and competencies required of early childhood educators, including;
    • the selection and use of a range of educational technologies, instructional resources, assessment and intervention strategies, and research evidence;
    • social and cultural competencies that recognise the need to build partnerships with families and communities for effective early childhood learning;
    • demonstrate initiative in catering for students with diverse educational needs;
  • becoming actively involved in the community of practice;
  • professional conduct during their professional practice (practicum);
  • a commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective practice.
