Social foundations research examines issues that reach beyond the given roles and goals of educational specialists and practitioners and delve into the complex interrelationships between school and society, education and culture.

In this context, schools are viewed as social organizations whose policies affect and are affected by social and intellectual currents both in Australia and abroad. Education, in turn, is broadly conceived and includes both schooling and non-schooling enterprises.

Research in the social foundations of education draws on the academic disciplines of sociology, psychology, philosophy and history, and the cross-disciplinary fields of comparative and international education and curriculum studies, to illuminate contemporary problems and issues in the perennial educational areas of: aims and policy; generic curriculum; generic teaching and learning; leadership, management and administration, and teacher education.
