Professional development days

 
School students

Professional development days are essential component of the Thinking Science Australia program.

The program consists of six days of teacher professional development, distributed over two years of Thinking Science implementation. The more staff who can attend from your school the greater the knowledge and capacity to implement the program in your school successfully.

Upcoming professional development

  1. Days one and two - two consecutive days (Either Thur 26 and Friday 27 Nov or Monday 30 Nov and Tues 1 Dec 2015)
  2. Day three - no more training for 2015
  3. Day four - Friday 11 December 2015

  5. Day 6 - Wednesday 9 December 2015
  6. TS Test Marketing and Analysis - Monday 23 November 2015

Days one and two

For schools planning full implementation of Thinking Science in 2016 or for teachers new to Thinking Science program and would like substantial immersion in the program.

This is a consecutive two day professional development program. To make it easier in terms of organisation, relief teacher requirements and budgeting, we will be running days one and two in two consecutive sessions.

Select from two possible sessions below.

Option 1: Thursday 26 and Friday 27 November 2015 (Week 7)

  • Venue – Ellenbrook SC;
  • Time: 9.00am-3.30pm
  • Cost: includes morning tea and lunch; $60 pp;

Option 2: Monday 30 November and Tuesday 1 December 2015 (Week 8)

  • Venue – South Fremantle SHS:
  • NOTE: Only TWO SPACES available at this venue.
  • Time: 9.00am-3.30pm
  • Cost: includes morning tea and lunch; $60 pp;

  • Introduction to TS: Theory; Piaget; intelligence; types of lessons; pillars of cognitive acceleration;
  • The first group of lessons and Baseline test
  • Observing a LIVE lesson demonstration
  • Changing pedagogy
  • The schemata (reasoning patterns)
  • Evidence based research
  • Implementing TS at your school and UWA support
  • Feedback

  • Reflection - teaching, lessons, technical issues, questions
  • The pillars of cognitive acceleration - Activity.
  • Focus on social construction and group work.
  • Thinking about thinking: metacognition.
  • The next set of lessons.
  • Coaching, collegiality, cooperation.
  • A LIVE lesson demonstration

  • Reflection - teaching, lessons, technical issues, questions.
  • Thinking Science – a model of professional development.
  • Transfer to other science lessons – plan a regular science lesson using TS pedagogy.
  • Where to next? Maintenance and progression; Classroom coaching.

TS Test Marking and Analysis (2 hour session)

Monday 23 November (Week 7)

  • Cost – FREE (includes afternoon tea);

  • Learn how to do some simple data analysis
